Term Insurance Versus Whole Life Insurance

well after a week whithout net I saw this very interesting article..
NOT a DESEASE bit it can almost be lol

Term? Whole Life? Which one to choose? This is the ultimate question when you are planning to purchase coverage to protect yourself while you are alive.

First let's look at the differences between Term vs Whole Life insurance.

Term Insurance:

Simply put term ins is pure coverage for a set number of years. You are protecting yourself and the income that you produce for a period of time. We say protecting your income because that is what live insurance is. Your children are dependent on you for your income and if something happens to you then your income is protected with this coverage. With term the monthly premium does not fluctuate during that period of time either.

A term policy can be purchased in increments of one year to 30 years and that is generally the time period that you need life insurance for. Once your children have grown up and can support themselves there will no longer be a need to have this type of coverage if you continue to save and invest your money outside of your term policy.

The beneficiary is named on the policy (could be your spouse or other family members) and upon the death of the insured the set amount is paid out to the beneficiary.

Term policies costs much, much less than WholeLife Policies do. There is no investment portion associated with this type of assurance coverage.

WholeLife Coverage:

This type of permanent insurance combines Term Ins and an investment together. The policy holder pays a monthly premium for the rest of his/her life. It is life insurance for the entire period the insured is living (plus an investment component).

With this type of permanent coverage you need to know that as people age the risk of death increases which makes the cost of insuring you much more expensive. If you understand this then you will realize that even if the ins agent tell you that you will pay the same each month in a permanent policy your monthly premium will start to creep up higher and higher in the future.

Different from Term, with Whole Life Ins you now have an investment component tied to your policy (under the ins co) which could be in:

Bonds / Money-market / Stocks

The monthly premium is also a set amount (that is what you are told) each month and generally more expensive than Term ins.

A portion of the funds that you are paying on a Whole Life policy will go into an investment vehicle which is the cash value portion of a permanent policy. There are a few investment vehicles to choose from with the insurer. You are able to "borrow" the money and pay it back with interest. Meaning that you can borrow for emergencies, family vacation and especially your children's college fund is what will be told to you by your ins co agent.

Building Cash Value

The cash value investment is held within and attached directly to your policy for the duration of the policy. The first year of the policy there will be no cash value because the money that you pay the first year is used to pay the high commissions the agent receives for pushing this type of ins to his or her customers.

Life ins premiums, whether term or wholelife tend to increase much more dramatically after age 50. Keep in mind that Term Life insurance companies may not insure people over the age of 65.

As we noted before the cost to insure a person rises with age so when the policy holder gets older. Initially the policy costs will start to eat away at the cash value where the amounts will start to decrease. As soon as the cash value amount is depleted the policy holder will see higher monthly payments in the future without realizing it especially if payments area already automated to be deducted from their bank account.

Term Insurance versus Whole Life Insurance? Which one?

Term Life is much less expensive and with your savings you can put that money into any investment which you choose and control.

Wholelife is coverage plus an investment component. The investment component is marketed as "forced savings" but it is savings within a limited number of investments under the control of the live insurance company. Ask yourself would you ever have any type of investment tied to your auto ins? It just does not make any sense.

Our recommended strategy:

When getting your term policy life insurance you can calculate the difference between a term policy and a wholelife policy.

It would be wise to buy term insurance policy and invest the money that you save in any investment vehicle of your choosing whether it be in money market, bonds, mutual funds or stocks outside of ins. You will have coverage and full control of your money (you won't need to borrow it if it was a permanent policy).

Life insurance quotes

Insurance has become more of a necessity more than a luxury in the present times. Life is so very precious that we have to protect it at any cost. Even if we lose our life, we should not leave our loved ones helpless. Death is a visitor that might make an appearance at any point. Our death should not shatter our family who will be dependent on us so that we should leave them some monetary benefits. To safeguard our monetary status during and after our life, insurance quotes are in place.

Insurance companies abound the market with the variety of insurance policies and benefits they offer. Insurance quotes need to be approached carefully in that one should be well informed on all the details associated with the policy. Once you are thorough about the policy, one can choose any company or policy freely.

Any person who is the sole earner for the whole family will be anxious about the family's future after their lifetime. While signing for any insurance plan, it is better to let the family know the benefits they can avail from the respective policy. Have a look at the quotes from various companies and in consultation with the family on the benefits associated with the policy, make an appropriate choice.

It is necessary for the singles too to have the right insurance policies so that in the event of his or her death, the family can pay off the debts incurred by the insurer during his or her lifetime. It is very difficult for the family if there is no insurance for the single. Hence it is very essential for the singles to have insurance policies in their names. The need for money in times of causality is a reality that we cannot avoid. Hence one has to look for the best insurance quote available and avail from it without waiting for any causality to come in your way.

It is best to compare the insurance quotes offered by many companies before zeroing in on one. The benefits associated with different policies differ widely. And it is best to see if the benefits proclaimed by the companies are feasible. Find out about all the benefits before selecting one.

In case the insurance seeker is totally unaware of the policy's different aspects, it is better to get an expert advice. Find out about the premium one has to remit, the terms of the premium payment, if it is monthly or annually. Insurance quotes differ across the companies in the same way as that of the kinds of insurance policies.

The insurance quotes come in different types: health insurance to cover medical expenses that will also include expenditure on treatment and accident relief. Vehicle insurance is there to provide insurance cover for the rider. Family insurance so that the whole family will be protected if the injured individual dies due to any natural catastrophe, health related reasons or accident. Scrutinize the kinds of insurance quotes and make an appropriate choice good enough for the whole family.

Free Insurance Quotes: Getting The Best Life Insurance

As life is very uncertain, it also follows that other people are quite frantic and obtaining free insurance quotes for choosing life insurance policies might prove very useful. If you are most people who are very futuristic and would like to have a concrete assurance that your belongings and best of all your life will be ensured should misfortunes befall any of those mentioned. It is also not at all surprising to discover frantic individuals who would like to place so much faith on health insurance policies to secure their future aging days. Likewise, it is also not difficult to understand why car owners try to look for the best deals when it comes to car security policies.
So if you are quite serious in buying a policy that will really fit into your needs, investing on free insurance quotes will lift off some of the greatest burdens you will be encountering in identifying a rightful policy. Yes definitely it will be of so much relief if you purchase these minimally priced yet very aidful information sheets. But if you think that perhaps these are just mere sheets containing figures with side bits of greetings and enthusiastic business agendas then perhaps its high time that you take another look at those sheets which you formerly set-aside.
The figures and all information contained per sheet is not at all placed there just to bore you. Rather their special placement is a perfect act of generosity that is sure to help you get what you really want from a policy without having to trouble you a lot. Why lesser trouble? This is simple because you need not visit or place calls on one company after another just to get the satisfaction that you need.
Since it is quite a very fascinating and interesting thing to do as your precious time will not be taken so much except for a few parcel the next best thing to uncover is where to get the best deals when it comes to these information sheets. Well just like any other items, you can also go to the online market and do a quick search on the information sheets that you need. With just a simple click and you are on your way to finding out the best deals in policies that is sure to keep your health and belongings in the safest possible financial frame work.

A lot of companies in the past have applied asbestos in their products although the fact that they did know how hazardous asbestos can be to human health. Life With Mesothelioma

In general, any cancer begins with a genetic mutation. This mutation turns normal, healthy cells into abnormal cells. The accumulating growth of abnormal cells forms a tumor. The causes accountable for the initial genetic mutation are still being researched but many risk factors have been identified.

It is always an interaction of various factors such as inherited tendencies, environment you live in, your health conditions and the lifestyle you choose. But despite knowing all these things developments of certain cancers like mesothelioma remain unknown. We can find out the risk factors or triggers those develop mesothelioma like asbestos exposure but not the exact cause.

The life with mesothelioma is certainly not anyone should get. "Even enemies shouldn't have this suffering" is the adage created for mesothelioma it seems; such is the danger that looms around this cancer. But it is also true that people who develop this cancer must have enough energy to fight back. Panic never helps because it further accentuates the spread of cancer due to negative frame of mind. Therefore, one should do following things to live with mesothelioma and avoid fear-

• Foremost thing one should know about mesothelioma is that upon witnessing the symptoms of severe cough and breathlessness, if there is history of asbestos exposure, one must not delay a hospital visit and insist for thorough check up. Early diagnosis of mesothelioma helps the victims to gain control over further treatments and this can obviously improve life expectancy in these patients.

• Treatment plans should be managed along with doctors and should allow the doctors as much freedom as they need to go for clinical trials so that there are high chances of faster recovery. Also try to seek information from various online channels and sites where you can find what you are looking for. This helps in clarifying doubts and erasing myths.

• The mesothelioma patients can also try seeking help from help groups where you can meet similar-minded people who are in fizzy just like you over their new-found status. This helps in enhancing the mental compliance to the treatments.

• You should also contact a good dietician who can help you secure healthy and nutritious diets in order to remain on par while going through the tedious treatment procedures.

• Most important thing is that you must cope up well with the treatments. When it comes to various clinical trials or alternative modes of treatments, you must know that they can be of huge help as an adjunct to mainstream treatment.

• Also while living with mesothelioma, you must seek legal help and seek compensation from the employer who made you suffer with asbestos exposure. Huge compensations are guaranteed by expert mesothelioma lawyers.

Life with mesothelioma is certainly not easy. But with firm family support and support from help groups, the patient can survive and cope better with the tragic situation. With newer treatment strategies, life for mesothelioma patients is not as difficult as it was earlier. Just one must strive for compensation and that too with expert mesothelioma lawyers is not difficult!

cord blood can save you

Have you considered storing your baby's blood at a cord blood-bank? For those who don't understand the term, cord blood refers to that blood that stays in the umbilical cord and in the placenta after the baby's birth. Usually this blood is thrown away. However, a cord blood-bank stores this blood at external facilities.

Cord blood is a rich source of stem cells. These cells are distinctive for your particular family and your baby. If needed, they could actually help developed tissues, systems and organs in the body. Stem cells have the ability to transform into other kinds of cells throughout the body. They thus can spur new growth and new development. In short, stem cells give physicians a way to treat afflictions such as leukemia or inherited diseases. Normally if a person develops leukemia, he might be considered for a bone marrow transplant to treat the cancer. However, with cord stem cells, the doctors can treat the disease often more effectively than with bone marrow.

In short, you should consider banking our baby's cord blood as an insurance policy. You hope you'll never need it, but it's there if you do, so that your child (or other family) will have a better, easier chance of recovery.

Collecting cord blood is nothing to worry about. It's a painless and safe process, and is usually done in fewer than five minutes. Your health care professional will do the process in one of two ways: through a syringe or a bag. Using a syringe, he will draw the blood from the umbilical cord soon after the cord is cut. Using a bag, the umbilical cord will be raised, causing blood to drain into the bag.

After the cord is collected, the medical staff will process it and then store it in a lab facility that they normally call a blood bank. If the facility is a credible one, they will store it in a facility accredited by AABB ("American Association of Blood Banks").

There are very few down sides with having the blood bank store your cord blood. No study has ever found any health risk associated with the process. There is no pain or discomfort in the process. You should know, though, that there normally are a couple of fees associated with it. The first fee covers enrollment in the program and a storage fee for the first year. The second fee is your yearly storage fee. The first enrollment fee could be anywhere from $900 to $2,000. The yearly storage fee is usually no more than a hundred dollars. Also, most facilities will offer a payment plan for the program should you need it.

Even if you decide that you don't want to store the cord blood for your own use, it could potentially be used by another family in the event of a health crisis. So if you decide that you don't want to pay the expense of storing it for yourself, usually a foundation or non-profit blood bank will offer to collect and process it at no charge to you. So please think about donating the cord blood, as there is literally no down side for you with this option.

To find out more about cord blood banks, you can ask your health care provider or just do a Google or Yahoo search for "cord blood bank."

Mesothelioma General

Mesothelioma doctors are medical specialists that treat mesothelioma, a rare and very dangerous type of cancer that is most usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Since mesothelioma is not easy to treat, doctors that specialize in its treatment are some of the most experienced medical professionals in the field of oncology.

As there are three types (pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal and pericardial) and several stages of mesothelioma that vary in severity, from stage I to stage IV, there are multiple treatment options available, all of which require a different set of skills, and as such a different doctor.

After preliminary diagnosis, which is typically conducted by a general practitioner, the patient is directed to a specialist called pulmonologist that will proceed with further tests. Should the original diagnosis stand true, the treatment of mesothelioma begins.

Surgery is an option if the disease did not spread far, and it can be done by a mesothelioma specialist called thoracic surgeon. However, recent studies have proven that surgery on itself is not efficient in treating mesothelioma cancer.

Chemotherapy is an additional treatment option; while it can be used alone, it has proved to be the most efficient when combined with traditional mesothelioma therapy such as surgery. The name for mesothelioma chemotherapy specialist is an oncologist.

Radiation can also be used to treat the conditon, often in combination with both surgery and chemotherapy. The doctor that specializes in mesothelioma radiation treatment is called a radiologist.

These doctors all work as one team providing the most efficient treatment to a patient, but the team would not be complete without a pathologist -- another doctor, who is reponsible for monitoring the changes in patient's condition. This doctor examines the spread or remission of the cancer while testing the patient's tissue samples and bodily fluids and is the one responsible for the prognosis.

All in all, mesothelioma doctors are some of the most experienced and dedicated medical professionals out there with a very hard job. They deal day to day with gravely ill and terminal patients, while saving or prolonging lives in the process. These hard working men and women fully deserve our respect and gratitude.

Mesothelioma

well today a friend of mine discovered that he has a cancer..

so i've decided ti post something for him...

It is common knowledge that smoking is hazardous to one's health. Additionally, many people know that exposure to asbestos is very dangerous and can lead to the development of the disease mesothelioma. What many people do not know, however, is that when smoking and asbestos exposure are combined, both of the harmful elements work together to create a much higher risk for the development of mesothelioma, or other types of cancers.

Cigarettes have many harmful chemicals that break down the lungs and can be leading causes in cancer. Asbestos exposure also exposes the lung to harmful chemicals that weaken your body's defenses against cancers and other lung problems. Studies have found that cigarette smokers have a four to eleven times greater chance of getting lung cancer than non-smokers. If a person is a heavy smoker, than the number goes up to twenty-seven times as likely. Adding a heavy smoker to asbestos exposure sends the probabilities for lung cancer skyrocketing. In fact, heavy smokers with a history of asbestos exposure have a 50 to 90 times greater chance of having lung cancer. Needless to say, heavy smoking and large amounts of asbestos exposure will almost certainly lead to lung cancer.

Smoking causes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). People who smoke and have been exposed to asbestos have higher occurrences of COPD than people who have not been exposed to asbestos. Some of the terrible effects of COPD are the inflammation and eventual destruction of small airways in the lung tissue. Once these tissues have been destroys, some people can be completely debilitated.

Studies have shown that people who quit smoking, but still had asbestos exposure are less likely to have lung cancer than those people who continue to smoke. Some say that COPD can be reversed the longer time is spent without smoking. Additionally, people who are able to quit smoking often feel healthier over time and significantly increase their life expectancy. Even though any amount of smoking or asbestos exposure can lead to lung cancer, the sooner one quits, the better off he or she will be.

Asbestos exposure is very harmful for anyone. However if you know that you have been exposed to asbestos, and continue to smoke, you are playing with fate. The sooner someone stops smoking, the sooner his or her lungs can begin to heal. Mesothelioma and other cancers are very serious diseases that often end in death. In order to stay alive for loved ones, smokers should quit immediately.

Drug Rehab

Today i was just surfing the web and in my job there appeared someone that is a drug user so i've decided to look for advices to him...

and i've foud this...

"Since quitting and deciding to help others to do the same I am frequently asked the hotly contested 'Is cannabis addictive?' question. It is a subject that fiercely divides most 'experts' and even those who spend their entire adult lives inhaling it. So let's attempt to establish whether or not cannabis is addictive.

Starting with a 'hard' drug just to make addiction easier to identify, read the following passage and decide for yourself if you think the person is or isn't addicted to heroin:

"When I can't get hold of heroin or if I know that I will be unable to have any for that night, I immediately turn into a different person. I am angry and emotional and I feel so depressed that I wont get that sense of relaxation and calmness from the heroin. I really hate feeling like I need it to make myself feel better."

In your opinion, is it reasonable to assume the person is hooked on heroin?

In my view there is no doubt whatsoever. I'd stake my mortgage and life on it!

Okay, re-read that same statement but this time the drug has now changed to cannabis.

"When I can't get hold of cannabis or if I know that I will be unable to have any for that night, I immediately turn into a different person. I am angry and emotional and I feel so depressed that I wont get that sense of relaxation and calmness from the cannabis. I really hate feeling like I need it to make myself feel better."

With only the name of the drug altered is it reasonable to assume that person is hooked on cannabis?

Remember only the name of the drug has changed!

The statement you have just read is in fact REAL and comes from a young woman who recently contacted me via http://www.quitcannabis.net who was clearly desperate for help - not because she was addicted to heroin but hooked on our 'friend' cannabis. I am not implying cannabis is comparable to heroin addiction (of course not!) or even that there are physical withdrawal symptoms when we attempt to quit, but there is still that sense of desperation and need for cannabis when circumstances force us to go without it for longer than we'd like. Like when your dealer is nowhere to be found and you can't relax or find enjoyment in anything you do. That sense of missing/needing cannabis is clearly a symptom of psychological addiction.

Imagine heroin or cocaine as a maximum-security jail and cannabis a low-security open prison. Regardless of the regime and conditions found inside the prison, the bottom line is; in spite of how thin and flimsy the walls are or how weak the security at the main gate is, the function of a prison is to restrict freedom. In this case, your happiness and enjoyment of life. Don't worry! Once you accept cannabis is addictive it becomes even easier, not more difficult to quit!

Free advice to quit cannabis is available at http://www.quitcannabis.net"

The Great White Shark vs. Lung Cancer

I was doing one of my favorite things the other day, watching the Discovery channel. My two favorite channels on television are The History channel and the Discovery channel. With the exception of the pay by the hour porn channels which I have only heard about but personally know nothing about, everything that you need to know can be found on these two channels.

When I sat down with my cup of coffee and flipped on the tube I found myself in the middle of some type of shark marathon. I’m not sure if it is shark week, shark week seems to last longer then the NBA season. Anyway the first show was about Great white sharks and the next was something called I survived or how to survive a shark attack one of the two. In my mind I have kinda merged the two programs to produce one coherent thought.

The people who were attacked by sharks told their stories about how they were in the water surfing or wading in the water fishing and how they were savagely and unexpectedly attacked by some unforeseen force of nature. There was the story of the young man fishing with his brother in murky water when he felt a bump on his leg next to where he had the bait fish tied to himself and then a few seconds later something grabbed his leg and pulled him underwater. After a life and death struggle his brother and others were able to pull him away from the shark but he did lose his leg. It was decided that the shark was feeding on the same fish that the boys were fishing for and that the attack was more of a “wrong place at the wrong time” incident.

There are many people who feel that most shark attacks happen in that fashion. “ Your in the water, cage is in the water, Sharks in the water, “farewell and ado to you fair Spanish Ladies”, isn’t that the line Robert Shaw says to Richard Dreyfuss in 1975 as they are contemplating the use of the famous shark cage in Jaws?

Same thing with the surfer, the swimmer, the wader etc. Random attacks. All these people have the same thing in common, they were all doing things they had done many times before when they were attacked by a predator.

According to an article published by Science Daily on February 20th of 2009, shark attacks declined from71 worldwide in 2007 to 59 in 2008 with 4 reported fatalities in 2008 as opposed to 1 in 2007. My earlier reference to Jaws and the constant playing of shark week serve to remind us that if we dare step into the water something very, very bad might happen to us.

The shark , the Great white shark in particular has been called the perfect predator. It’s sole purpose is to feed and survive. I don’t think the Great White swims home at the end of the day and scratches little swimmer figures onto the side of a sunken ship to mark humans he ate that day like a World War two ace marking his plane after a day of combat but that seems to be the uninformed Hollywood based opinion we hold onto. He simply swims and eats and if it’s a fish or a seal or your uncle Bob, the shark really doesn’t care. A shark does not discriminate. He is not concerned with your religious beliefs, the color of your skin, how much money you make or owe. Your there, He’s there, end of relationship, he either bites you or swims past you without you ever knowing he was there.

Perfect Predator.

Unless you start comparing it to lung cancer.

If cancer were sharks, then lung cancer would be the Great White Shark of the cancer world, due to it’s potential to hit you and kill you quickly. Most of the time with lung cancer by the time you realized you have a problem, it’s already too late. Which is why the mortality rate is so high.

As I watched and listened to a young lady relive her attack and escape story, she said something that really hit home for me in the simplicity of it’s profoundness. She said, “ I knew that if I was going to act like prey, I was going to be prey.” She then went on and told us how she grabbed hold of this two thousand pound great white shark and started beating the hell out of it until it finally swam away.

You must have that same strategy with cancer, all cancer. The first step to survival is to make the decision that your going to live, that your life is worth fighting for. This young lady really nailed one of the fundamental facts of life, Act like Prey, become Prey. After you decide to fight for your life you then must do it regardless of how the odds are stacked. Fight with everything you’ve got and with every weapon doctors and scientists can offer you. Look at every treatment available, Never settle for the final diagnosis.

I listened to a story where a lady was being held under by this shark, she was punching and wrestling with this thing that was trying to end her life. Almost out of air and losing consciousness from blood lose, she felt her life slipping away, when suddenly the shark simply let go and left. Sometimes that’s the way it happens, you fight hard, you win.

Cancer , Like the shark, does not care about you personally. It has no interest in the effect that it is going to have on you or your family, it doesn’t care what you believe in or who you are. Cancer lives to do one thing, feed on your healthy cells and tissues until it does enough damage to kill you. Cancer never takes a coffee break, it is not easily distracted and is willing to go the full twelve rounds. Unlike a shark who is more of a hit and run kinda guy. You can’t make cancer go away by poking it in the eye or punching it in the gills which, by the way, I learned are the two places you want to aim for if your being attacked by a shark.

Here comes the reality in comparison of our two worst nightmares.

The Great White vs. Lung Cancer.

Great White kills to live

Lung Cancer Kills just because

Great White prefers seals and fish to humans

Lung Cancer prefers humans not real fond of fish(smells up the house)

Great White attack, five minutes and it’s over one way or the other

Lung Cancer knows no time boundaries, it prefers a quick fight but is willing to fight it out with you into the late rounds if needed.

Great White can only hurt you if your in the ocean

Lung cancer comes at anytime, anyplace and anywhere.

Great White has limited effect on life of average person.

Lung Cancer will effect one out of five people in one way or another during the course of their lifetime.

Great White Shark- Awesome musical score from John Williams that plays in the back of every humans mind when they enter the water since the summer of 1975.

Lung Cancer- music heard in waiting room of cancer clinic. (shark wins that round)

Great White Shark will be responsible more then likely for no deaths this year.

Lung cancer will kill an estimated 159,400 people this year according to the National Cancer Society.

I could go on , but the hands down winner is lung cancer as far as being the more lethal predator of the two.

Truth be told you stand more of a chance dying in a car accident on the way to the beach then you do by a shark attack. But should you happen to run into one or have one run into you. Try to stay calm, Don’t act like food and aim for the eyes and the gills, stay away from the mouth the teeth are like razor blades.

If you happen to run into lung cancer, try to stay calm, get the best advice on treatment you can find. Find doctors and a facility that you believe will assist you the best in your fight for life. Research and learn all you can about your disease and everything and anything that can be used as a weapon to fight it. Watch your health, share information with the people around you because they are your best allies in your war. Build your strength and commit yourself to the fight. Then fight every waking hour of every day because that’s what it will take to make this shark swim away.

If these things aren’t working for you, “your gonna need a bigger boat.” Go out and find one, but never give up.

In one of the shark shows, I heard about research being done on things that would deter a shark from attacking.

I have also heard of research being done to help deter lung cancer. Both would be great breakthroughs in their relative fields. If they could devise something that kept sharks away from you then that would help limit your one in 10 million odds of being attacked by a shark.

Develop something that allows you to take preventative measures prior to being diagnosed with lung cancer and you could perhaps save millions of lives.

I wonder which endeavor receives the most research funding?

Great White Shark vs. lung cancer, that answer might come as a surprise.

food involvement in gastrointestinal disease

Food as a cause of the epidemic of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease in the “civilized” world is a relatively new concept that is gaining popularity. Loren Cordain, Ph.D. is one of the pioneers in the U. S. in the field of paleolithic nutrition. He and others have published numerous high quality articles on the concept of the hunter-gatherer as a diet that our bodies were meant to follow. These researchers have established solid data that indicate our ancient ancestors who were hunter-gatherers ate little to no grains, legumes or dairy products and appear to have been spared the degenerative, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases that we in the Western or civilized world are experiencing in epidemic proportions.

Archeological and anthropological findings support the absence of many of the diseases of our current civilized world in these ancient cultures. Furthermore, the few remaining “uncivilized” hunter-gatherer tribes or cultures that exist have been found to be largely free of the common diseases of our “civilized” culture. However, when exposed to our more modern diet habits these peoples begin to experience the diseases of our culture. This has been particularly well documented in native eskimo. The diet of hunter-gatherers is variably known as the Hunter-Gatherer diet, caveman diet, Paleolithic diet or just the paleo diet.

More recently Dr. Cordain and others have been researching the role of food lectins as an explanation for the success of the paleolithic diet. Despite his excellent book The Paleo Diet and his website http://www.thepaleodiet.com, there is a general lack of knowledge of this important information in the both the lay and medical community. There is also some confusion and misconceptions about what constitutes a Paleolithic diet. In my experience, as a stomach-intestine specialist who frequently recommends my patients try the “paleo diet”, resistance is commonly encountered because of its restrictiveness, difficulty to adhere to in our modern culture and society and uncertainty about how long such a diet should be followed. Much more research into the role of food lectins in human disease is desperately needed.

What follows is my suggestion based on my personal and professional experience with food intolerance and a variety of gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms (brain, nerves, skin, joints, general energy) combined with lectin and paleolithic diet research. As a specialty trained and board certified gastroenterologist (specialist in digestive diseases) I have modified the paleolithic diet to include the lectin research data as well as information on food allergies and cross reactivity food intolerance occuring in people with pollen allergies. The diet could be termed a Neopaleo Specific Diet® or possibly better a Neopaleo Health Plan®. There may be some future modifications of these initial recommendations. However, in interest of helping individuals who are suffering from food intolerance or toxicity, these preliminary recommendations are offered.

For a minimum of 28 days, preferably 90-120 days, it is recommended that an individual seeking to recover from gut injury (‘the leaky gut”) and the associated toxicity and inflammatory symptoms avoid all potentially dangerous or high-risk food lectins. This means eliminating all cereal/grains, especially the gluten containing grains (wheat, barely and rye) as well corn and rice; legumes (includes peanut and soy); and dairy products. Because the so-called Nightshades (tomato, potato, pepper and eggplant) have food lectins that have been associated with a variety of inflammatory diseases especially arthritis conditions, they should be excluded initially as well, especially in those with inflammatory type symptoms. Peanut and soybean are both legumes that are very common causes of food allergy and intolerance, and have specific lectins that have been shown to injure the gut and even enter the blood stream potentially facilitating the leaky gut and extra-intestinal symptoms. These are strictly excluded within the first 90 days.

If you are known to be allergic or sensitive to certain foods you should obviously avoid those foods. Implied in the diet is the recommendation that no processed foods be eaten due to the presence of many of the above food lectins in such foods. Oftentimes these food lectins are hidden within the ingredients with labels that are impossible to decipher such as natural flavors, modified food starch, stabilizers, and emulsifiers, etc.

Some people with pollen allergies or latex allergy react to certain foods, in particularly in a particular type of allergy reaction called the “oral allergy syndrome” or OAS. If you have a documented tree, grass, weed pollen, house dust mite or latex allergy you should consider avoiding foods known to cross-react with these allergens.

“What can or am I suppose to eat on this diet?” you ask. The diet consists primarily of lean meat and fish, eggs (if not contraindicated by history of allergy or sensitivity) and fresh fruits and vegetables. The diet becomes an adventure in all natural foods but a challenge to established misperceptions of what constitutes healthy eating. Planning and frequent trips to a grocer with great selections of fresh organic fruits, vegetables and meats and seafood are important for success.

After 90 days of this Neopaleo Specific Diet (NSD)®, foods are gradually re-introduced one at a time, each week, while carefully noting any return of symptoms to suggest residual or ongoing intolerance and/or sensitivity. It is possible that some foods will not be able to be re-introduced without risking adverse health consequences. Those with documented Celiac Disease or non-celiac gluten intolerance or at high risk for Celiac Disease (family history, HLA DQ2, DQ8 or dual minor DQ for gluten sensitivity) are advised not to re-introduce gluten.

Before starting the NSD and while on it, it is advised that you keep track of your symptoms as well as their severity using a 1-10 scale in a food-symptom diary. Body pictures localizing your symptoms are also helpful to track the symptoms and look back on for assessment of response and re-appearance of similar symptoms with re-introduction or challenge of food lectins later. In the near future http://www.thefooddoc.com will offer online food-symptom assessment, diet recommendations specific to individuals based on their known or suspected sensitivities and an online food-symptom diary. However, if you are suffering from apparently unexplained chronic fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, or other inflammatory or autoimmune conditions then I would encourage you not to wait to try a elimination diet specific to your history.
